ROLLING THUNDER

EVE OF DESTRUCTION!!

DECEMBER 3RD, 2005 - TINGLEY COLISEUM

FREESTYLE MOTOCROSS

We usually try to cover some of the companion events that are included at Monster Truck events, and there were a few other things going on due to the event being an Eve of Destruction, as opposed to the usual Rolling Thunder Monster Truck Challenge.  One of the events was the Freestyle Motocross where the riders were pulling some amazing air in the Tingley Coliseum.  There was also to be a demolition derby after the Monster Trucks, but my parents didn't end up staying for that portion of the show.

FREESTYLE COMPETITION

BORN TO BE WILD

Once again, Larry Quick would be leading off the Monster Truck Freestyle competition, and also once again, he would not disappoint!!  A very strong, fast paced run from Born to Be Wild, including some great donuts (not pictured) and awesome destruction as he blasted through the RV camper!!  What a way to kick off the Freestyle portion of the show, and way to set the bar high!!  To our Monster Blog judge, Lauren Bonar for the score . . .

DAD'S SCORE:  8

AWESOME KONG

Next out would be Rex Smith, for his first run, this one behind the wheel of the Awesome Kong truck.  Rex would put on a nice show for the crowd, but it really seemed to be a warm-up for his run in the Monster Patrol, which he would be coming out last in.  Solid, if not spectacular, run from Smith and let's see how it scores with the old man . . .

DAD'S SCORE:  6

PIT BULL

The next competitor would be hometown favorite Charles Benns and his beautiful Pit Bull Chevrolet!!  Charles got some great hits over the cars, and up, over, and through the now demolished RV camper!!  Next Benns whipped the Pit Bull into some donuts, but after a couple of rotations, the truck started to smoke.  Recognizing a problem, Benns brought the Pit Bull to a stop, but now sooner had the truck stopped rolling, than a large fire erupted from underneath the front of the truck down by the engine!!  Benns begin to quickly unbelt and try to get free from the truck as Larry Quick and other track crew members ran to his aid.  With Larry's help, Charles was able to escape from the truck with only minor burns.  A very scary moment, but thankfully Benns would be ok.

"We were really lucky," said Benns.  "I'm fine, the truck is going to be fine, and we gave them one heck of a show!!  We did have a great weekend as far as the children's hospital was concerned.  We made them some good money, and gave them a wild show!!"  That he did, and the Pit Bull team will return to fight again.  Kind of an afterthought after the scary incident, but its time to find out what the score was from Dad!!
