USHRA THUNDER NATIONALS!!

FEBRUARY 10-11TH, 2006 - UTC MCKENZIE ARENA

Another day, another show in Chattanooga!!  I left the house at 3:00PM on Saturday so that I could get there extra early and that really worked out great.  When I got there, they were moving Predator over to one of the tunnels.  I thought they were just getting prepared for the Pit Party, but I went over there to check out the truck.  That wild hit on the cars I told you about in the Friday night coverage did more damage than anyone would have ever thought.  In the picture below, you can see that the frame broke in about 7 places!!

Pablo Huffaker welded on the frame for 2 hours straight.  Even though he didn't have the best equipment to do it with, he got it all welded up and ready before the Pit Party.  Aaron Basl and Larry Jaruzel were hard to work too, as they got Blacksmith's rear end fixed and ready to go.

I talked with Bruce and Jamie Haney over by Bad News Travels Fast for about 30 minutes and those have to be some of the nicest people I've ever met.  I must say that they did an awesome job cleaning that truck up after that mud-fest in Miami the previous week.  Their truck was spotless and performed well all weekend.  Well, enough chit-chat, let's go racin'!!

THE WHEELIE CONTEST

As the day before, the show would get started with the Wheelie Competition!!  This would also again set the brackets for Racing.  The lighting was terrible for the first two trucks, but I managed to get decent pictures of them this time.  First out was Devastator and Mark Schroeder did a great wheelie, getting the nose really high.

Bruce Haney in Bad News would be up next and did a good wheelie too.

Next out would be Blacksmith and Aaron Basl stood the truck up better than anyone so far!!  It was a very impressive wheelie.

Larry Jaruzel in Predator came out next and did his wheelie but he didn't push the truck as hard as he did the night before, probably taking it easy because of the damage.

Last up was Grave Digger and Pablo stood the truck straight up and down taking the Wheelie Competition win for the second night in a row!!

RACING COMPETITION

ROUND 1

In racing, Pablo Huffaker had a bye run in Grave Digger due to his Wheelie contest win, but he didn't treat it like it was a bye run.  He floored it off the line and the truck hit the cars kinda crooked and Pablo had to get back in the gas to power out.  It was a very good save and he really had to get on the binders to get it stopped.  My picture doesn't do it justice because it got further up on its side than that.

Next up would be Bruce Haney in Bad News up against Larry Jaruzel in Predator.  Bruce got off the line first and defeated the Predator.

The next race would be Aaron Basl in Blacksmith vs. Mark Schroeder's Devastator.  Blacksmith took off hard at the line and did a big wheelie while taking the win!!

SEMI-FINALS

The first half of the semis would put Pablo Huffaker in Grave Digger up against fast loser Mark Schroeder in Devastator.  Digger blasted off the line and beat Devastator by a full truck length.

The other half of the Semis had Bad News racing Blacksmith.  Haney got off the line first and beat Blacksmith with ease.  Aaron did a good wheelie in Blacksmith during his run though.

FINAL ROUND

The Finals would be the same as the night before.  Again, it was all about lane choice with the blue lane being the better lane.  Continuing the deja vu, it was once again Pablo Huffaker in Grave Digger getting off the line first, and taking the win.   Bruce Haney didn't make it easy for him though, making a nice run, and making this race closer than Friday night's.  Grave Digger took another racing win home, and was now 5 for 5 in Chattanooga with Freestyle up next!!

FREESTYLE COMPETITION

BAD NEWS TRAVELS FAST

It was time for Freestyle and all the trucks seemed to be in good mechanical shape from what I could tell.  Bruce Haney in Bad News came out first and put on a really good show.  Bruce kept up good momentum and pulled off a really good set of donuts, taking the steering wheel off during the donut!! The crowd loved that move, and Haney would receive a score of 18 from the judges.

DEVASTATOR

Mark Schroeder in Devastator would be up next and Mark pushed the truck pretty hard, but didn't have that great move that Bad News did.  But, overall, Mark had a solid run, and actually received a better score, getting a 20 from the judges.

BLACKSMITH

Next out was Aaron Basl in Blacksmith.  Aaron got some good air during his run, and did a very good set of donuts.  His run would earn his a score of 19, keeping Mark Schroeder on the hot seat.

PREDATOR

Larry Jaruzel came out next to last in the Predator and got some pretty good air, but there was nothing very spectacular about the run.  However, It was a solid run for a somewhat damaged truck, and the crowd would leave it to Digger to beat Devastator, as Predator would only receive a 19.

GRAVE DIGGER

The stage was set for Pablo Huffaker in Grave Digger to complete his second show sweep of the weenkend in Chattanooga.  He would only have to beat a score of 20 to do it.  Pablo came roaring out and hit the cars with a lot of speed.  He was clearing the cars easily but wasn't getting much elevation because they were smashed so flat.  He also did some really good donuts to end his run.  Pablo did indeed make it another sweep in the Grave Digger by winning the freestyle competition, tonight with a score of 28!!

THE FINAL WORDS

I gotta admit that tonight's show was a lot better than the Friday night show, but I think the part that I liked the most was getting to know some of the drivers and USHRA officials before the show.  They were all super nice, and a huge thanks out to all of them for their hospitality and hard work in putting on a great show.

When I got out of the arena Saturday night, there was about an inch of snow on the ground.  I know that's not a lot for you New England folks, but it had me worried, lol!!  I made it home safely but did some nice "drifting" on the way home.  I was planning on going to the Sunday show as well. but something came up and it snowed another couple inches, so I decided just to sit it out.

We did learn later thought that Pablo Huffaker made it a perfect weekend by sweeping all three competitions in Sunday's show as well, which has to be some kind of record.  Anyway, thank you for reading my coverage from Chattanooga, and sorry for the "not-so-great" pictures, but I did the best I could.  Leave us some feedback on the Fan Forum, and thanks again for reading!!
