MAVERIK CLASH OF THE TITANS
ROCKY MOUNTAIN RACEWAY - WEST LAKE
CITY, UT - 08/11-12/07
(continued)
Waking up, cleaning up,
and now we have to find a place to setup and send in some pictures. On to
a local Burger King where rumor was there was wireless internet. Breakfast
and trying to hook up, no luck with Burger King wireless. Plus, no
electricity, what was I expecting? lol So I called Mr. Pittman at
RMR, told him our problem and we would like to get some pictures up so
fans could see how things are going at RMR this weekend. He said there was
wireless at the track we could hook up to and to come on over. After
stopping at a couple Wal-Mart’s looking for the new Hot Wheels King Krunch
‘no luck” we made it to the track. Mr. Pittman let Lynn set up in the drag
strip tower and she contacted Ross, sending pictures.
After saying hello to everyone we seen in the pits, we checked with
Ron Duncombe to see how the Maverik Monster Trakker was doing. Ron said
his crew had Monster Trakker ready for action. Ron had a big spread of
food and invited us to eat with them, we appreciated their hospitality as
we had just eaten, but his shade sure came in handy over the weekend and
we sure appreciated the use of it.
Checking with David Smith & King Krunch, David said they stayed up
late into the night working on it, got up early calling and looking for
parts. Some they found, some they didn’t, but they kept working hoping to
get it going for qualifying, but it did not look good at this point.
I walked over to say hello to Doug Charles and Larry Swim and
spotted a gentlemen hanging out near their big rig. I asked who that was,
and Larry said that it was Clive Featherby from Australia. I recognized
Clive’s name as a Monster Blog sponsor, KC’s Fireworks, and remembered him
as the gentleman trying to get monster trucks going down under. I asked
Larry & Doug to introduce me. Speaking with Clive, I found out he was
stateside doing some business and possibly looking to buy another Monster
Truck. If you want to know what Clive has done for monster trucks in his
home country, check out

QUALIFYING
Next thing you know, it was time to get started and we were climbing up
the ladder to the flag stand for qualifying. I found out in the pits that Larry
Swim in Bearfoot had been competing all weekend with just first and second gear.
In that case he did very well yesterday, but was in for another rough day today.
Doug Charles' qualifying run today was much better in Monster Patrol as he was
getting used to the sharp Figure 8 turns. There was also much improvement on the
second day from Kaptain Insano, Dragon Slayer and Captain USA as it doesn’t take
these professional monster truck drivers long to catch on. Again, that 11%
banking while making a sharp turn can be very tricky. Comeback of the weekend
has to go to David Smith in King Krunch. He finished repairing his engine
(rebuilding his engine) and pulled in line to qualify with three trucks left to
go. Pablo Huffaker broke his own track record at RMR in Grave Digger as he tore
around the track, proving Saturday was just a bad day.
ROUND ONE RACING
Race 1: Pablo Huffaker in
Grave Digger versus Doug Charles in Monster Patrol
Today Pablo Huffaker left nothing to chance in the first round as he had lane
choice and took off leaving Monster Patrol in the dust.
Winner: Grave Digger.

Race 2: Paul Jensen in Kaptain Insano versus Keith Sturgeon in Bigfoot
Kaptain Insano had the preferred inside lane and with Paul Jensen’s continually
improved driving over the weekend took this race. Keith Sturgeon did all he
could to take Bigfoot to the next round. Going into the last turn it was all or
nothing for Bigfoot so he gunned it hoping for the perfect turn, but not this
time.
Winner: Kaptain Insano

Race 3: Roger Stidel in Captain USA versus Dan Runte in Firestone Bigfoot
Roger Stidel told me before the race that his dream was to race Bigfoot, so I
know he was really excited during this race. Roger and Captain USA had the
outside lane and that alone was not going to help him. Dan Runte in Firestone
Bigfoot took off and never looked back, really putting the pressure on Captain
USA. Roger knew he had to go for broke and really gunned it, but taking a hard
right in the second turn spun out.
Winner: Firestone Bigfoot

Race 4: Daron Basl in El Matador versus Kreg Christensen in Dragon Slayer
Daron Basl in El Matador had been the best on the outside lane all weekend. El
Matador never seen the inside lane all weekend, so I expected a very good race
with Kreg Christensen in Dragon Slayer really coming on. However, more bad luck
for Flame Motorsports as right after the first turn El Matador lost gears, all
over the track. He was done for good, with Dragon Slayer getting the easy
victory.
Winner: Dragon Slayer

Race 5: Aaron Basl in Black Smith versus Ron Duncombe in Maverik Monster
Trakker
Second time these two monsters hooked up this weekend. This time Maverik Monster
Trakker had the inside lane and took full advantage of that fact as he took out
Black smith.
Winner: Maverik Monster Trakker

Race 6: Larry Swim in Bear Foot versus David Smith in King Krunch
There was no way Larry Swim in Bearfoot had a chance against King Krunch with
just first & second gear and the outside lane. If you listen to the video of
this race you can tell Bear Foot had no third gear going down the back stretch.
Larry Swim gave it his best shot, but Bearfoot let him down.
Winner King Krunch

ROUND TWO RACING
Race 1: Pablo Huffaker
in Grave Digger versus Paul Jensen in Kaptain Insano
Grave Digger took off and looked like he was going to leave Kaptain Insano in
the dust. Kaptain Insano with a couple nice turns was never really in the race
but he made sure the Digger knew he was there.
Winner: Grave Digger

Race 2: Dan Runte in Firestone Bigfoot versus Kreg Christensen in Dragon
Slayer
Dan Runte in Firestone Bigfoot with a lead could now slow it down a bit as
Dragon Slayer slipped in the second turn costing him some serious seconds.
Winner: Firestone Bigfoot

Race 3: Ron Duncombe in Maverik Monster Trakker versus David Smith in
King Krunch
This was a race until right before crossing the cars to the finish line; Maverik
Monster Trakker was fast in that outside lane. I am sure David Smith knew this
was getting serious, just as Ron spun out before going over the crushed cars.
Maverik Monster Trakker’s spin then just sat there and idled before finally just
driving off the track. The Maverik Monster Tracker never finished the race by
going over the crushed cars. This will cause some confusion in the pits.
Winner: King Krunch

Back in the pits I overheard Kreg Christensen ask a race official who was the
fastest loser? The official said that the Maverik Monster Tracker was the
fastest loser. Kreg said, how can that be, he did not finish the race? The
official once again stated, it was the Maverik Monster Trakker. Kreg again said,
he can't be fastest loser if he does not finish the race. At this point I walked
away, I did not want to hear anymore as I knew Kreg was right. If Ron Duncombe
driving the Maverik Monster Tracker finishes the race, there is no doubt he
would be in the semi-finals with that run he had. It was just a mistake by Ron
being a fairly new driver.
SEMI-FINALS RACING
Race 1: Paul Jensen in
Kaptain Insano versus Pablo Huffaker in Grave Digger
Kreg must have gotten his point across as here was Paul Jensen facing
Grave Digger in the semi finals. This time a couple slips and Kaptain
Insano did not do as well and Pablo Huffaker in Grave Digger took it
easily.
Winner: Grave Digger

Race 2: Dan Runte in Firestone Bigfoot versus David Smith in King Krunch
King Krunch was just as smooth as Firestone Bigfoot and had the lane of choice
with the faster qualifying time. King Krunch was too much for Bigfoot taking the
race and continuing his amazing comeback from a blown engine.
Winner: King Krunch

THE FINAL ROUND
Final: David Smith in
King Krunch versus Pablo Huffaker in Grave Digger
Grave Digger took the two lap shootout for the championship, then put on a
victory pre-freestyle. During the race on the second lap, King Krunch spun
out in the second turn in the backstretch, but did he stop and back up
costing him time? No, he went with it doing a donut and forged
ahead. It wouldn't matter however, as by that time, Pablo was long gone.
Congrats to Pablo Huffaker for taking Sunday night's big racing win.

Unlike
the previous night however, the show was far from over!! Freestyle was up
next, head on over to the next page to check it out!
