  • ST. LOUIS MONSTER JAM RECAP!!:  We just got back from tonight's St. Louis Monster Jam and all I can say is WOW, what a show!!  We had an absolute blast, in what was one of the best events we have been lucky enough to attend.  The Racing portion of the show was very exciting from top to bottom, with many photo finishes, but in the end it would be Jimmy Creten in Bounty Hunter taking the big win over Tony Farrell in Blue Thunder!!  Freestyle was insane, as the drivers all made great use of the awesome track setup, and really put on one heck of a show.  Very notable performances came from Lupe Soza in El Toro Loco and Tony Farrell in Blue Thunder, but it was Tom Meents who blew everyone away with an amazing run that won't be soon forgotten by anyone in attendance tonight!!  Meents took the Freestyle win, and in a very classy act, dedicated his victory to friend Calvin Carrington, who was killed last week in Tulsa, OK.  Overall, the show was awesome, no doubt the best we've been to this year.  I have put together a very cool Recap to hold everyone over until we finish the full coverage here in a few weeks, so click below for our full recap with 50 pictures!!  Thanks & Enjoy!!  (02/26/06)

  • Tragedy in Tulsa:  This weekend's tragic incident at the Darryl Starbird Car Show & Monster Truck Races in Tulsa, OK claimed the life of a prominent member of the monster truck community, Calvin Carrington, owner of Wildfire Motorsports, and driver of the Full Throttle monster truck.  Carrington was an accomplished racer, owning four American Monster Truck Association Championships, and was currently riding an 11 out of 12 winning streak into the weekend's events.  While no words can take away any of the pain caused by this accident, we here at The Monster Blog send out our deepest sympathies to the Carrington family and friends, and they will be in our thoughts & prayers.  Also injured in the incident was our good friend Shane Smith, driver of the Venom monster truck for Holman Motorsports.  We wish Shane a quick and full recovery from his injuries, and he too will be in our prayers.  (For news story on incident, go to KOTV.com)  Memorial Tribute Photo by Jacob Smallwood.

  • UPDATE FROM SHANE SMITH!!:  We here at The Monster Blog are incredibly relieved to have spoken with Shane Smith this evening, and hear that he is doing ok and on his way home tonight.  Shane shared with us his chilling first hand account of this tragic incident, and he is indeed lucky to be alive.  Shane suffered a concussion and had to have six stitches in the back of his head, but beyond that and some heavy bruising, Shane is ok.  He was released from the hospital around 6AM the morning following the accident.  Shane stated that he was truly touched by the outpouring of concern, saying "I appreciate the calls and the thoughts from everyone, I have been truly impressed by the response folks have given."  We thank Shane for taking the time to call us, and are incredibly glad to have heard from him.  We continue to keep the Carrington family in our thoughts and prayers, and wish them the best in getting through this tragic time.  (02/20/06)

  • Calvin Carrington Funeral Arrangements:  There will be a visiting Wednesday, February 22nd from 7pm - 9pm at Whiddon-Shiver Funeral Home, 10451 US Hwy 84 East, Thomasville, GA 31799.  The phone number for the funeral home is (229) 226-5621.
The Funeral Service will be held at the Boston Baptist Church on Main Street, Boston, GA at 11am. People may go to the the Whiddon-Shiver Funeral Home and then go in procession to the Church and then a graveside burial at Boston Cemetery, Boston, GA to follow.

    Thank you and God Bless,
    Kelley and Kyle Carrington
(This information was passed along from the Carrington family, and posted per their request).

  • Kyle Carrington Fund:  Robyn Brow, Secretary of Treasury for the Monster Truck Racing Association, has started a fund to benefit the Carrington family in their time of loss.  All proceeds will be given to Kyle Carrington, the son of the late Calvin Carrington, who was fatally injured at the Tulsa, OK event this past Saturday.
This from Robyn Brow: "In case anyone has not heard, one of our Owner/Driver members was fatally injured this weekend at a show.  Calvin has been a racer, promoter for a long time.  I am starting a fund for his son Kyle.  Please find it in your hearts to help one of own."
Checkered Flag Productions has issued a challenge to all MTRA members to match a $50 donation, and also encourages others to donate as well.
There is no minimum donation, and any amount will be accepted and appreciated.  You may donate using Paypal to Robyn Brow's account at ccfinc@adelphia.net.  Checks or Money Orders are also being accepted and can be forwarded to Robyn Brow at 14843 April Drive, Loxahatchee, FL 33470.  For any and all questions, please feel free to contact Robyn at (561) 662-5022.

  • Traxxas T-Maxx Press Release:  Minneapolis, Minnesota (February 18, 2006) – The USHRA Monster Jam® series visited downtown Minneapolis bringing 12 of the best monster trucks in the country together for an impressive display of horsepower and big air. The Traxxas T-Maxx®, driven by Carl Van Horn, looked to continue its winning ways in Minneapolis.
The weekend kicked off with the pit party allowing fans to meet and greet their favorite drivers. R/C fans were out in force for the pit party and local R/C clubs provided fans with R/C truck demonstrations and racing action.

Monster truck racing started out with qualifying on the Chicago-style course. The Traxxas T-Maxx lined up with Tom Meents and Maximum Destruction, and when the light went green Carl put the hammer down and set the fast qualifying time that held up until the final qualifier.
The 2nd fastest qualifying time set by T-Maxx setup a first round battle with Hot Wheels®, piloted by Chuck Warner. Van Horn unleashed the 1,500+ horsepower of T-Maxx and sailed into the 2nd round with an impressive victory. Up next was a second round match-up with Air Force. In a demonstration of power and agility the Traxxas T-Maxx one again was victorious and earned a spot in the semi-finals.
In the semi-finals the T-Maxx lined up against the Bounty Hunter® driven by Jimmy Creten. Both trucks had excellent runs but it was the Bounty Hunter edging out T-Maxx in a photo finish. The Bounty Hunter went on to defeat Grave Digger in the racing finals.
Monster truck freestyle went well for the Traxxas T-Maxx team, and T-Maxx finished 3rd in freestyle with a score of 19. T-Maxx put on an exciting freestyle run filled with big air, donuts, and huge wheelies. The fans were on their feet cheering on the Traxxas T-Maxx in Minneapolis.

  • Traxxas T-Maxx Press Release:  Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (February 10, 2006) – The USHRA Monster Jam tour made its annual stop in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania much to the delight of the Philadelphia fans. The three day event was packed with four competitions, each including a wheelie, racing, and freestyle contest. The Traxxas T-Maxx® was the truck to beat, taking the win in two of the four races! In route to its race victories T-Maxx defeated a stout field of trucks including Grave Digger®, El Toro Loco®, Monster Mutt®, and Blue Thunder®.

All weekend long the Traxxas T-Maxx scored in the high 20’s in freestyle and the wheelie contest. T-Maxx had outstanding wheelies in the wheelie contest throughout the entire weekend. T-Maxx was able to go vertical several times sending the monster truck fans into a frenzy. T-Maxx placed 2nd or 3rd in the wheelie competition all through the weekend.
Van Han put on four incredible freestyle performances over the weekend. T-Maxx thrilled the fans with back-to-back runs filled with vertical wheelies, ferocious donuts, and monster air. It is easy to see why the judges awarded T-Maxx with high scores.
Winning was the name of the game for T-Maxx in the straight-line drag racing competition. The full-size version of the #1 selling T-Maxx R/C monster truck made the semi-finals in each race contest, and on Saturday night and Sunday afternoon T-Maxx was the outright winner. On Saturday night Van Horn defeated Monster Mutt, Suzuki®, and then went on to beat Blue Thunder in the final race! The fans loved the awesome performance from the T-Maxx.
During Sunday’s show T-Maxx took on Monster Mutt and El Toro Loco, and would find another final round match up with Blue Thunder. Carl put the hammer down and defeated Blue Thunder in a repeat performance from the previous day. The Traxxas T-Maxx prevailed much to the delight of the fans who were on their feet cheering, “T-Maxx, T-Maxx, T-Maxx.”
Upon accepting the accolades for winning, Carl thanked everyone at Traxxas for their support. The Traxxas T-Maxx can be seen next Saturday (February 18) at the Minneapolis, MN USHRA Monster Jam event (02/17/05) Photo By Monster Blog Special Contributor Dave VanArtsdalen.

  • MTRA SPECIAL OFFER!!:  This letter was received from MTRA President Jeff Bursey: "I am writing you to let you know about an exciting offer that has been presented to the MTRA but because I want to show people what membership in the MTRA can do for someone, I am passing this offer along to everyone.   WESCO has said that they will sell us a SFI 3-2a/15 firesuit for $509.00 plus s/h, if we can fill an order of 50.  Many feel that the expense of this firesuit may be keeping many from seeing the other benefits of the MTRA.  Now that we have made it easier to obtain certification I would urge every monster truck owner/driver, and anyone who loves the sport to consider joining the flagship of monster truck associations.  Anyone who is interested can contact Jeff Bursey himself through email at towwrex@adelphia.net!!"  So if you are looking to upgrade your current firesuit, or are breaking into the business and looking to buy one, get in touch with Jeff and take advantage of this great offer!!  (02/17/05)

  • January Archive:  With the beginning of a new month comes the archiving of the previous one...and none too soon, as the main page here was becoming VERY large with all of the great coverage we provided this past month here at The Monster Blog.  I have kept on the main page, however, material from this past weekend, including the Indy Recap & Teasers and the Orlando & Phoenix teasers, so that they are still highly visible.  All of the rest of January content can be seen by scrolling down to the bottom of the main page and clicking on the "January 2006" link in the Archive table.  Heading up the page is Chris Parrish's awesome picture of Grave Digger from Pontiac that has been awarded the "Picture of the Month" title for January.  Be sure to see all of the great stuff from last month if you haven't already, and we are ready to go wild in February!!  (02/02/06)

  • Indy Monster Jam Recap!! We have moved the Indy Recap and Teaser shots to another page to help with the congestion here on the main page, so click below to check out our full recap from the Indy Monster Jam!!  (02/12/06)
