ROLLING THUNDER M.T. CHALLENGE

JANUARY 7TH, 2005 - GLENDALE ARENA

FREESTYLE MOTOCROSS

The filler act for the evening would be Freestyle Motocross, and while Dad didn't take many pictures of this part of the show, my parents both said that they really enjoyed it.

RACING COMPETITION

Before getting into the match-ups of Racing, I must admit that I can't quite figure out exactly how they structured the Racing portion of the show.  It seemed pre-determined that two trucks would race for 7th place, and two trucks would race for 5th place.  Then the other four would pair up, with the winners going to the Finals.  I don't pretend to understand it, but that's the format the show was following.

1st Round

AWESOME KONG VS. TORQZILLA

So, anyway, the first match-up of the night would be Awesome Kong and a young guy by the name of Clint (last name unknown) in Torqzilla going head-to-head for 7th place....yeah...Anyway, it would be Torqzilla getting the jump at the start and taking the win over Awesome Kong.

NASTY BOY VS. UNNAMED & UNTAMED

Next up would be Nasty Boy and Unnamed & Untamed racing for 5th place.  In the match-up of Sturges vs. Sturges, it would be Sturges taking the win!!  Sam, that is, in Unnamed & Untamed!!

Semi-Final Round

SUMMIT BIGFOOT VS. MONSTER PATROL

Ok, onto the real racing brackets, still not sure what that was all about before.  Dan Runte in Summit Bigfoot would be taking on Rex Smith in Monster Patrol.  In what ended up being a very close race, Runte just edged out Rex Smith in Monster Patrol, sending Summit Bigfoot in the Finals to compete for the overall Racing win.

EL BANDITO VS. BEARFOOT

Time for some driver musical chairs, as Don King would be racing el Bandito, while Larry Quick stepped in to Bearfoot for this match-up.  The two trucks both got a good jump off the line, and absolutely skied the trucks going over the cars!!  On landing, el Bandito got out of shape, and the truck flipped end over end wildly!!  Larry Quick was declared the winner in Bearfoot, while Don King fired up el Bandito and drove it out to the center of the floor, where he popped out the window as the crowd cheered for his wild ride!!

Final Round

SUMMIT BIGFOOT VS. BEARFOOT

Well, the legendary Final Round match-up was set, it would be the classic Bigfoot vs. Bearfoot battle for the Racing win in Glendale.  In continuing the game of musical chairs, it was Don King taking the wheel behind Bearfoot once again for the Final Round.  Dan Runte got the jump on the start, but Don King was charging hard.  Runte barely edged out King at the line, while King had to do some fancy driving to get Bearfoot back under control, after a strange bounce.  Your Racing Champion in Glendale is Dan Runte in Summit Bigfoot!!

Once the Racing Competition was over, the announcer interviewed Don King about his wild ride in el Bandito.  Dad was also able to get a picture of Don with the busted up truck during intermission.

With the Monster Truck Wheelie & Racing competitions in the books, it was now time for the Monster Freestyle Competition!!

FREESTYLE COMPETITION

The Freestyle Competition would split the trucks into two groups.  Four trucks would compete in the First Round, and three trucks would compete in the Second Round.  The winners of each round would move on the face off against one another in the Finals for the win.

UNNAMED & UNTAMED

Leading off in Freestyle was Sam Sturges in the Unnamed & Untamed ride.  Sturges got some great air of the carsets, making three hits, before his final, and most spectacular move of the night.  Sturges hit the far sets of cars and got the truck completely vertical, landing on the back of the truck!!  See the animation below for this awesome move!!  A short, but very exciting Freestyle from the veteran Sam Sturges!!
