Bad News Travels Fast, Bearfoot Take Wins In Columbia, MO!!:  Monster trucks returned to Columbia, Missouri's Boone County Fairgrounds this past weekend and it was Bad News Travels Fast and Bearfoot sweeping racing and freestyle!!  TMB was on hand to cover Saturday night's action and Don King in Bearfoot kicked off the show with an incredible wheelie contest performance. Jim Powers in The General had the edge after a couple great sky wheelies, but after King's efforts there was no doubt Bearfoot was the winner. King started with a huge past vertical sky wheelie that he combo'd into a slap wheelie. His second effort again saw the truck on the tail gate, with Don doing his patented "Bear Walk" off the cars and down the track. And just to put an exclamation point on the run, King hit the wheelie bump and rode another slap wheelie down the track.

Bruce Haney in Bad News won Friday's racing over King and wouldn't you know it, the two were back in the finals on Saturday. Haney got the holeshot off the line and King's truck veered suddenly toward Haney's lane as they approached the cars. King made every effort to stop the truck but there was contact with Bad News as they crossed the finish line. Haney picked up the win, but a busted crossover relief valve on the rear steering would put him out for freestyle.

Freestyle would start off with Cody Martin in El Bandito and follow with a solid run from Roger Gauger in Quadzilla. Gauger had some nice hits on the cars and a couple big hits on the van stacks to take the early lead. Rookie driver Jim Powers impressed with a solid effort in The General. Powers had a couple great sky wheelies and managed to walk three slap wheelies across the arena to raise the bar for Don King and Bearfoot.

King roared out onto the track and put on a wheelie clinic, putting Bearfoot on its tailgate over and over again with both sky wheelies and slap wheelies. To finish his run, King nailed a huge past vertical sky wheelie that he tried to walk off the cars. But the truck tilted too far over and couldn't be brought back as Bearfoot suffered his second rollover in as many nights. Much like the wheelie contest however, there would be no doubt that Bearfoot was the winner as he completed a weekend sweep of freestyle.

A big thanks to Don King and Bobby Paul for their hospitality and a great time. Stay tuned for plenty of video and a full photo gallery from the event, coming soon!!  (08/23/09)

Mike Hawkins Sweeps Back to School Monster Truck Bash!!:  The Circle K Back to School Monster Truck Bash celebrated its 10th anniversary in style Saturday night as ten top monster trucks competed in racing and freestyle on one of the wildest courses ever constructed!!  The action would get started in qualifying where drivers had their first opportunity to take on the difficult race course. Starting on the backstretch, the trucks would race two laps around the infield, hitting an over / under crossover each lap. Mechanical gremlins struck early as pre-show favorite Mark Hall in Raminator lost power during his qualifying run and would not be back in action until freestyle. Doug Noelke in Tail Gator laid down the quick time which held until Carl Van Horn, a surprise substitute for Steve Sims in Stone Crusher, took the top spot. But Mike Hawkins was on a rail in Equalizer, staying smooth and fast and getting the #1 position.

Racing would see some hard-nosed competition and some exciting moments. The first round featured a great come from behind victory by Tail Gator, as Noelke managed to chase down Andy Hoffman in Nitemare at the finish line after spinning in the final turn. The semi-finals would see CVH take down teammate Ricky Ownley in Mopar Magic while Hawkins rolled past Jim Koehler in the Avenger, setting up a great final between the two fastest trucks. A classic race would ensue as the two hard chargers roared around the course. Coming to the finish line, it was neck and neck with Van Horn trying to run down Hawkins. In a close finish, Hawkins would just edge Van Horn as Stone Crusher veered left and took out the start finish light.
Freestyle got started with solid runs from Mopar Magic and Nitemare before Mark Hall took out his frustrations on the course in Raminator. Hall laid down a great run that featured donuts, a slap wheelie, huge air and a great save. That run looked like it might hold for a while until Chris Bergeron put on a 4+ minute clinic in Brutus to take the lead. However, Randy Moore in War Wizard put on a great show for the two minutes before a cross thread move over the over / under landing ramp threw the truck into a slap wheelie and then back over onto its roof. Moore emerged from the truck to the roars of the crowd as he took the freestyle lead.

Two heavy hitters would fall by the wayside next as Carl Van Horn in Stone Crusher got a great start to this run, but bent the rear 4-link bars on a hard landing and a donut attempt caused the truck to rollover. Next out, Jim Koehler in Avenger was just getting started when a motor problem ended his night early.

The door was open for Mike Hawkins to repeat his double down win from 2008. He wasted no time in putting together the best run of the night with huge air, tons of momentum, wheelies, and usage of all the obstacles on the track. The WOW moment of the night however came as Hawkins tried to spin Equalizer around on the banking in turns 1 and 2. The truck hooked and roll over hard, kicking up onto the nose and giving Hawkins just enough bite to hammer the throttle and bring the truck back to all fours. Hawkins roared around to the frontstretch and laid down some incredible cyclones and after finishing, the crowd went wild for Equalizer and there was no doubt who the winner of freestyle was.

It was an incredible night of action at the Back to School Monster Truck Bash and we congratulate Mike Hawkins on a great night in Equalizer. A huge thanks to everyone with Monster Truck Challenge and Lowe's Motor Speedway for their hospitality and for another great event. See below for a quick preview of the action featuring the racing finals and a clip from the winning freestyle:

Stay tuned folks for more great photos from Lauren Z. Bonar and Chris Parrish, along with our next episode of TMB TV featuring footage Ross & Rajeana Bonar!!  (08/15/09)

10th Annual Back to School Monster Truck Bash This Saturday!!:  (Concord, NC) The Dirt Track @ Lowe's Motor Speedway is celebrating 10 years with 10 gargantuan machines at the Circle K Back-to-School Monster Truck Bash on Saturday, Aug. 15. The most unique vehicles in motorsports, Monster Trucks are typically 11-feet tall and tip the scales at nearly five tons. Their custom-built, fuel-injected engines produce between 1,500 and 2,000 horsepower and the massive machines can jump 110 to 115 feet - a distance greater than 14 cars lined up side by side. Equalizer, Raminator, Samson, Tailgator, War Wizard, Brutus, Nitemare, Mopar Magic, Avenger and Stone Crusher will compete in head-to-head challenges at The Dirt Track.

The evening will include a series of one-on-one elimination races over a radical obstacle course featuring the new Over-Under element where one truck jumps over the other. The gigantic vehicles will also battle in an insane freestyle competition. Equalizer, the 2008 Monster Truck Bash champion, is looking to repeat after winning both the elimination and freestyle rounds last year.
In addition to the Monster Truck mayhem, crazy CRASHCars will be in action with their wild-and-wacky Trailer Race of Destruction. Super Bob Airborne is also set to perform a spectacular stunt. Festivities begin with the Circle K Pre-Race Pit Party where fans can meet the Monster Truck drivers, have their pictures taken with the enormous racing machines and obtain autographs. Ticket holders can gain early entry to the Pit Party by purchasing a Thirst Buster Cup at any Circle K store and presenting the empty cup at the gate. Darren Migues Sweeps Final Night of the 2009 Maverik Clash of the Titans!!:  After a wild night on Saturday at Rocky Mountain Raceway, the twelve truck field was back at it Sunday for the conclusion of the Maverik Clash of the Titans weekend. It was evident from qualifying that the trucks to beat on Sunday would be Dan Runte in Summit Bigfoot and Darren Migues in Bounty Hunter. Runte would end up with the top qualifying spot, but only because Migues knocked over a pole for a one second penalty leaving him second on the grid. David Smith and Rodney Tweedy were fast once again Sunday as well.
Racing would see some close races and wild moments, including Mitch Tulachka rolling Geter Done in the first round of racing. The final four would come down to Daron Basl in El Matador taking on Migues and Tweedy taking on Runte to see who would make the finals. The two fastest trucks in qualifying would prevail, setting up what was sure to be a classic final round match-up. The two-lap championship race did not disappoint as the two battled hard, but when it was all said and done, Darren Migues in Bounty Hunter took the big win!

Freestyle would see solid runs from Iron Outlaw and Captain USA to start the competition. Geter Done and El Matador raised the bar, but the win came down to the three stars of the weekend. King Krunch and Summit Bigfoot both had strong runs that received high scores, and only Bounty Hunter was left to go. Migues proceeded to put on a clinic, laying down a great run and jumping heights previously unseen. The last jump resulted in a flat tire, so after one more wild set of donuts, Migues called it quits to the roar of the crowd. That run would be enough to put Bounty Hunter on top in freestyle, giving Migues the weekend sweep.
That would complete another great edition of the Maverik Clash of the Titans at Rocky Mountain Raceways, always one of TMB's favorite events to follow. We've only made it out there once back in '07, but who knows, maybe 2010 is the year for TMB TV at the Clash of the Titans, stay tuned!!  (08/10/09)

David Smith, Dan Runte Winners at Maverik Clash of the Titans XIII Saturday!!:  The month of August always brings one of the year's biggest events, the Maverik Clash of the Titans at Rocky Mountain Raceway in Salt Lake City, Utah. Twelve monster trucks, always featuring some of the biggest names in the sport, racing on a figure eight style course and of course, freestyle - what more could you ask for?  Day one of Clash of the Titans XIII brought plenty of action, starting with qualifying. David Smith is always good at RMR and he showed it, laying down the fastest qualifying time. Team Bigfoot took a big hit in qualifying, as Larry Swim lost a motor in Bigfoot Bad Boy, putting him out for the weekend, and Dan Runte took a hard rollover in Summit Bigfoot.

Runte would be able to return for racing, but it just wasn't his night as he fell in the first round. Smith would continue running strong, driving King Krunch on to the final round, defeating Roger Stidell in Captain USA in the semi-finals. Rodney Tweedy entered the weekend with a 100% winning percentage and was looking to keep it going, making it to the semi-finals where he would face Joe Miller in Iron Outlaw. But a red-light at the start would cost Tweedy a shot at the win, handing the berth in the finals to Iron Outlaw. In a great final round match-up, David Smith was simply too strong for Miller as he piloted King Krunch to his biggest win of 2009.
In past years, only the Sunday show at the Clash of the Titans featured freestyle, but not this year. All of the trucks still running put on a great show for the fans, but it was Team Bigfoot gaining some redemption with Dan Runte and Rodney Tweedy riding huge slap wheelies the length of the track to top freestyle. Runte in Summit Bigfoot took the win with a perfect 40 score while Tweedy drove Snake Bite to second place, only one point behind Runte.
The trucks are back in action tonight at RMR to conclude the 2009 Maverik Clash of the Titans. Stay tuned for results!!  (08/09/09)

Introducing the New Crushstation "Monster Lobster"!!:  TheMonsterBlog.com has learned of an excitingly unique new truck based out of Jefferson, Maine, Greg Winchenbach’s brand new “monster lobster”, the Crushstation!!

Greg is no stranger to monster trucks, campaigning his own truck for a period in the mid-nineties and also driving for other owners including Calvin Carrington and Larry Birch. In 1999, Greg purchased a brand new chassis from Patrick Enterprises and has spent the last ten years gradually building the new truck.

Thinking of a name for the truck, he thought of how when meeting people, they would inquire about his accent and where he was from. When Greg would respond that he was from Maine, the common associations were cold weather and lobster. Combined with the fact that Winchenbach once spent time as a lobster fisherman, the idea for a lobster 3D-bodied monster truck seemed a perfect fit. With the help of a local boat shop, a wild new fiberglass lobster body was created and the name “Crushstation” was settled on, a take on the term crustacean and the act of crushing cars.

With the truck now completed and its first appearance in the books - a display and boat crush in his hometown - Greg and his Bottom Feeder Motorsports team are ready to head out on the road and compete. Greg is an owner / driver member in the MTRA and will have the truck certified shortly. Promoters interested in booking the Crushstation can contact Greg through email at crushstation23@yahoo.com or by phone at 207-549-3398. Plans for a team website are currently in the works as well. A big thanks to Greg for supplying the photos and information for this update and best of luck to him and the Crushstation!!  (08/06/09)

Jim & Chris Allen's Glendale, AZ Monster Jam Experience!!:  Jim & Chris Allen have been bringing you great coverage this summer here on TMB, and we're very excited to have another coverage from Jim and Chris Allen, this time from the first Monster Jam at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, AZ. We've got another great blog from Chris and more outstanding photos from Jim, check it out below:
"The University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona has a lot of claims to fame. It is home of the Arizona Cardinals, a former BCS Bowl host, a former Super Bowl host and now a to-be televised Monster Jam event. And it will not be just any Monster Jam event. The two biggest names in the sport, Anderson and Meents, Grave Digger and Maximum Destruction crossed paths for the first time ever in the Valley of the Sun. The two big guns would not have it easy, however, as the rest of the field consisted of Frank Krmel and Blue Thunder, David Smith in King Krunch, Daron Basl and El Matador, Andrew Peckham in Tropical Thunder, Chad Fortune with Superman, Dan Rodoni in The Patriot, George Balhan and Escalade, Alex Blackwell in Captain’s Curse, Kevin Lewis in Bulldozer and Rod Wood in McGruff.

Qualifications proved to be the start of one unpredictable night. The fastest qualifier turned out to be Blue Thunder. Grave Digger and Maximum Destruction turned in the 2nd and 4th fastest times respectively, which put them on the same half of the racing bracket. Blue Thunder earned a free ticket to the second round after his scheduled opponent, King Krunch, could not make to the Advance Auto Parts start line due to problems with the front axle. Superman flew higher than Tropical Thunder, Patriot upset Escalade, Captain’s Curse defeated El Matador, Grave Digger buried Bulldozer and Max D took a bite out of McGruff to close the opening round. Max D was slightly late getting to the start line for the beginning of round 2 but he came on strong and defeated The Patriot. Grave Digger defeated Captain’s Curse and Blue Thunder flew past Superman. Round 3 saw the fastest loser, Captain’s Curse defeat Blue Thunder to get to the finals. Then it came: The very race thousands of people had come to see. It was a semi-final round match-up between Meents and Anderson. The winner? Madman Max D! In a World Finals X rematch for the Championship, it was Tom Meents versus Alex Blackwell. The result, however, was still the same. Max D took the racing trophy!
Freestyle proved to be described by one simple word: Insane. The rules gave the drivers up to 30 points for the first 90 seconds and as much as 5 bonus points for the 30 second bonus time. On average the leader was in the Hot Wheels Hot Seat for only two freestyles. It was to be a frustrating night for Kevin Lewis, breaking the left front wheel half off and ending his run with 20 seconds to go in regulation time and got only a 15 from the judges. Later lead freestyles were done by Superman, Escalade and Blue Thunder, scoring a 25, 27 and 29. When it was all said and done and the dust plume cleared, Grave Digger and Maximum Destruction had both turned in incredible freestyles, but it all came down to bonus points. Max D got 3 bonus points for a score of 30, but the father of freestyle outscored him by just one point. It was a super Monster Jam Summer Heat event and the fans went away buzzing with excitement!!"
Thanks to Jim & Chris for another great job covering Monster Jam in Glendale, click the link below to see all of Jim's awesome photos. Jim & Chris will be back with us later this year when the Major League of Monster Trucks returns for their annual Red Bluff, CA West Coast Monster Truck Nationals!!  (08/06/09)
