Tulsa, OK Southern Monster Truck Showdown Coverage!!: TMB spent this past weekend hanging with the Southern Monster Truck Showdown crew as they teamed up with the Tulsa Motocross Park to bring in monster trucks for the very first time. Martial Law, Heart Breaker, Desperado, Outtacontrol and Cyborg would compete in wheelie, racing and freestyle contests each day. Kaila Savage showed that she is adapting great to her new ride, winning 5 of 6 competitions on the weekend, with only Drew Haygood in Desperado able to break the sweep as he picked up the Saturday racing victory.
In addition to the monster truck action, our great friends with the Midwest Tuff Trucks crew were on hand for some of the wildest tuff truck action we've ever seen. The trucks competed on the motocross course which featured a huge double jump that resulted in some huge air. Matt Schumacher in Iron Horse picked up the big win Saturday night while the rookie driver Drew Darnell cruised to victory on a carnage filled Sunday afternoon. Congrats to both of those guys on their wins and a thanks to all of them for putting on a great show this weekend.
A big thanks to the SMTS crew and the Tulsa MX Park staff for all their hospitality this weekend. TMB's Ross Z. Bonar split the weekend taking photos and video and we've put together photo galleries and a highlight video of all the action from the events. Click the links below to check out our coverage!! Ms. BIGFOOT, Retro-Racer Set to Debut in
Springfield This Weekend!!:
(Hazelwood, MO) Team BIGFOOT will take yet
another huge step forward this weekend in commemorating their
Amber
will begin her driving career for Team BIGFOOT by campaigning the
beautifully painted MS BIGFOOT body atop the BIGFOOT #11 chassis, a task
for which she is VERY excited! “The original MS BIGFOOT was such an
awesome truck, and it marked the first time women really made their mark
in this sport,” said Walker. “To be able to renew that tradition and to
give all the girls in the crowd a BIGFOOT of their own to root for is
going to be great!” Veteran BIGFOOT #11 driver Jerry Dalton will serve as
Amber’s crew chief for the duration of the weekend.
Torgerson Motorsports Announces Return of
Rolling Thunder Motorsports Tour!!:
After five years away, TMB has learned
that Torgerson Motorsports is bringing back the Rolling Thunder
Motorsports Tour for 2010 and beyond. Owner Stanley Torgerson began
promoting events in 1979 and continued all the way through 2005, but now
is bringing the company back and returning to full time promotion.
Larry Swim Captures Second Consecutive CFP
Title!!:
(Hazelwood, MO) After an intense indoor
racing season that lasted from January through April and stretched across
18 different
After a crowd-pleasing run
in the wheelie contest, Swim's night would take a frustrating turn as he
was narrowly upset in the first round of racing by Devin Jones in
Barbarian. Due to the fact that the event was a double-elimination format,
each of the eight trucks in the field would return in round 2 to face
different opponents. Swim was not about to let the championship slip
through his fingers, and promptly defeated the ever-capable Mike Hawkins
in Equalizer in the second round of competition. Swim would have to lean
on his BIGFOOT machine hard in the semi-finals to pull out a win, as he
once again squared off against Devin Jones in Barbarian. The outcome would
not be the same as it had been earlier in the night, as Swim would handily
defeat Jones and move on to the finals. Serving as his opponent in the
finals would be none other than Darren Migues and Bounty Hunter. As
ruthless of an opponent as any, Migues had been enjoying a great deal of
success on the Chicago-style race track. Migues' and his machine would not
be enough to overcome the determination of Swim and his legendary BIGFOOT
truck however, as Swim would soar across the finish line first, earning
his second racing win in Pocatello in as many years.
SFI Foundation Announces Decertification of
Impact Racing Products:
(Poway, CA) Yesterday, SFI advised the racing
community that Impact Racing suits bearing 3.2A/5 certifications “made
prior to 2009 have been constructed with non-compliant materials that, in
SFI’s judgment, pose a safety risk to users of those suits.” Impact
responded by attacking SFI certification programs (although Impact and the
other major equipment manufacturers have agreed to and participated in the
development of these well-established programs); by claiming it could not
get a fair hearing of the decertification appeal (although Impact asked
for and received an expedited appeal procedure); and by claiming that
“SFI’s actions have caused racers unnecessarily to question their safety.”
It is this last point that requires a very specific response. Bottom Feeder Motorsports Welcomes McLaughlin Seafood!!: (Jefferson, ME) Bottom Feeder Motorsports, home of the Crushstation monster truck and driver Greg Winchenbach, is proud to welcome McLaughlin Seafood as the team’s primary sponsor for the remainder of the 2010 season. Based out of beautiful Bangor, Maine, McLaughlin Seafood is a family-owned business for over 30 years that specializes in local fresh seafood and nationwide shipping of live lobsters. Lobsters are shipped from their docks right to your door using Fedex overnight so that they arrive fresh and feisty.
The
sponsorship of the Crushstation monster truck is McLaughlin Seafood’s
first foray into motorsports, with the goal to market their online seafood
shipping business to a whole new base of customers.
Dan Runte, BIGFOOT Return to Firebird
Raceway This Weekend!!:
(Chandler, AZ) When people think of the
BIGFOOT team of monster trucks, minds quickly turn to awesome power,
insane wheelies, ravaged cars, crazy air and general monster truck mayhem.
Runte, who calls Firebird International Raceway one of his three favorite
tracks to perform on, recently set a new world monster truck land speed
record during a drag race against the Firestone Snake Bite on Oct. 25th at
the Texas MotorPlex in Enis, Texas. Runte and BIGFOOT eclipsed the record
by running an 8.261 at 84.49 mph!
Flame Motorsports Press Release!!:
(The Woodlands, TX) With our first show after
the World Finals, where else would you want to go but sunny California?
Daron has been out since early March or was it late February, I am sure he
could tell you. Any how he has been out a while and after Vegas he headed
back over to our home away from home the Obsession shop. We had quite a
bit of work to do to the trucks since our last show and Daron got right to
it. King Krunch had chassis damage and El Matador had front end damage.
Daron worked his tail off and got both trucks ready for Fresno. The
weekend went great with our team trucks performing very well. Krunch was
one of the fastest trucks there, with El Matador and Obsession coming in
right behind. All the trucks did great freestyles at all three shows as
well as the wheelie and racing competition. We were all in the top of the
field all weekend and pulled away numerous wins through out the weekend.
Monster Truck Madness Coming to Soaring Eagle Casino!!: (Mt. Pleasant, MI) The ground will rumble as Soaring Eagle Casino in Mount Pleasant, Michigan hosts Monster Truck Madness on Saturday, July 3rd. Monster truck fans will see some of the big guns of monster truck racing as former world freestyle champion Jim Koehler in the bright green ‘57 Chevy Avenger and two-time freestyle champion female driver Jocelyn Perrin in High Maintenance take their machines though the paces in a high flying wheelie contest, Chicago-style racing, and all-out, full-on monster truck freestyle on a huge outdoor course!
But
don’t count out Columbus, Michigan’s own Chris Bergeron driving Brutus
along with one of the sports’ quickly rising stars, Jon Zimmer in the
Amsoil Shock Therapy. Convicted of mass devastation is The Felon from
Muskego, Wisconsin with Mark Schroeder at the controls along with the
heavy hitting Excaliber driven by Chris Ryan rounding out the field. O'Reilly Monster Truck Racing Super Series Returns to Fort Smith, AR!!: (Springfield, MO) The O’Reilly Monster Truck Racing Super Series roars into Harper Stadium, Fort Smith for one wild, heartstopping weekend, Friday & Saturday, April 30 & May 1 at 7:30 p.m. both nights. out motorized mayhem. Wild & crazy action you have to see to believe!!
Also, see wild wheel to wheel Pro Quad Racing and the spills and thrills
of this wild motocross racing action.
Monster Spectacular Blasts Off 2010 In
Montreal!!:
(Montreal, Quebec) “Monster truck fans, this
is ground control. All systems are go. Strap yourself in and hold on
tight. We are ready for lift off. Five, four, three, two, one. We have
ignition…BLAST OFF!!”
The
show began with one more example of Chris Arel creativity. Typically the
first monster truck event is a wheelie contest. But this time things got
really big - as in big air. It was a monster truck long jump contest. The
monsters hit a custom built ramp with each ramp track just wide enough to
fit the terra tires. The driver had to show driving skill in hitting the
ramp accurately and fearlessness in hitting the throttle. It truly was
“blast off” as they headed into orbit, jumping well over 80 feet in
distance. The truck everyone was gunning for used all of the 1800
horsepower Bounty Hunter had to give to win with a monster long jump of 93
feet.
When
all was said and done, Bounty Hunter had won two monster truck
competitions in a row. Freestyle featured the famous and unique Monster
Spectacular format of the variable clock. Somewhere between two and four
minutes, the red light comes on. As always, the key to an impressive
freestyle is momentum, aggression and hitting every obstacle while filling
the clock. And what a selection of obstacles there was. A double school
bus stack with car stacks around it that allowed monsters to hit it from
every angle. Two cube van stacks and multiple traditional van stacks. Even
the racing lane car stacks were raised up 3 feet on platforms of dirt. As
well, a Super Motar feel was created with lots of bare concrete floor left
open for cyclone donuts and flat track slides.
But the first new superstar of the Monster Spectacular season was created
when Bad Habit hit the track. An amazing series of freestyle moves that
included seriously huge air, sky wheelies and long jumps. The fans were on
their feet when Joe Sylvester rolled the truck over after almost
throttling out a save. During an on track interview as the track crew
worked to run Bad Habit rubber side down, the muscular Italian driver
expressed his disappointment in the run, saying that wasn’t the way to end
it. He begged Arel to let him back in the truck and run to the red. Chris
Arel is a former driver and a fan at heart; he knew that this was a
special moment. As soon as the truck was right side up, the wild man from
Ohio climbed back in the 2010 Cadillac and put the finishing touches on a
run that makes Bad Habit a good habit to have in monster truck freestyle.
Scarlet Bandit showed that girl power was a power to be reckoned with and
Avenger showed why Jim Koehler is called Mr. Excitement. Former World
Freestyle Champion Koehler ran the green demon so hard that smoke was
pouring out of the back of Avenger as he finished his full four minute
run. Another example of a driver making the ultimate sacrifice for what
really matters in monster trucks – the fans.
Jimmy
Creten could have coasted through freestyle. The former World Freestyle
Champion could have taken it easy and rode his reputation to victory. But
that would not be acceptable to Creten, who literally tore the tack to
pieces. Bounty Hunter assertively hit every obstacle with smooth as silk
turns. Big air, wheelies donuts - you name a monster truck freestyle move
and Bounty Hunter delivered it. Creten ended his run parked on top of the
double bus stack to the deafening cheers of the fans. While the other
drivers rode in golf carts to wave to the fans, Creten walked the track
alone, looking every fan in the eye as if to ingrain his motto, “You can
run, but you can’t hide”. Sean Duhon, Eric Tack Take Wins at Historic Return to the Silverdome!!: An incredible, historic night is in the books as monster trucks returned to one of the most significant venues in monster truck history, the Pontiac Silverdome with Domination In The Dome!! A huge sixteen truck lineup would compete in racing and freestyle events while Larry Quick would attempt to become the first driver ever to complete a double backflip. BIGFOOT would return to the place where a simple car crush in front of over 70,000 people 28 years ago effectively started the monster truck craze. Truck names that used to be regulars at the Silverdome like Excaliber, Michigan Ice Monster and Predator returned while drivers who had performed at this great building so many years ago like Allen Pezo and Bobby Holman were back as well. An what better to make the experience truly one of a kind, then the re-debut of the newly restored Predator 1 performing an old school car crush.
As
teams began arriving and the FMG Events crew worked on the track, the
atmosphere was electric and you could tell just from the looks on
everyone's faces that this wasn't just any event. While the Silverdome
itself did still show signs of having been dormant for nearly five years,
to monster truck people who understood the history it represents, it had
never looked better. As showtime neared and doors opened for the pit
party, you could see the looks of excitement on many fans faces, as they
returned to a building they had been to so many times before, reliving old
memories and ready to start making new ones.
Round two would see huge match-ups as Eric Tack in Bigfoot was paired up against Jon Zimmer in Excaliber while Bobby Holman's Lucas Oil Stabilizer met Sean Duhon in Sudden Impact. Tack prevailed in a thrilling race while Duhon made easy work of Holman. Also moving on would be a strong running Jocelyn Perrin in High Maintenance and Dale Mitchell in Lone Eagle.
The final
four paired with the heavy hitters going head to head and the two
surprises getting a chance to race for a spot in the finals. In the
closest race of the night, Sean Duhon ended Bigfoot's hopes of winning
racing in their return to the Silverdome, defeating Tack by no more than a
few feet at the line. In another close race, Jocelyn Perrin continued to
impress with a strong run to defeat Dale Mitchell.
Before freestyle began, fans were treated to some incredible exhibitions. Larry Quick made the attempt in Ghost Ryder to become the first driver to successfully complete a double backflip. It was not to be on this night, as Quick nailed a picture perfect single backflip but was unable to get a quick enough rotation to bring it around again. Nonetheless, the Silverdome fans erupted at the still amazing site of seeing a monster truck complete a backflip.
Old school monster truck fans were treated to the an amazing experience as Allen Pezo fired up the newly restored Predator I machine and paid tribute to the roots of the sport, crushing cars in an awesome throwback car crush. A TMB camera rode along for this historic exhibition and that footage alone will make this TMB TV a must see. Special thanks to Allen Pezo for allowing us to ride along with him for this special occasion.
With
Sean Duhon being the privileged driver to have claimed one of the special
trophies, the other drivers were even more fired up for one more chance to
etch their name into the history books as it was time to begin freestyle.
Over the years when Monster Jam came to the Silverdome, the largest stack
typically included would be a large box van stack. FMG Events pulled out
all the stops, with two massive bus stacks and the huge FMX hill in the
center for the monsters to tackle. The course would end up being two
intimidating for some, but for others it was just what they needed to go
big and get wild.
In a surprising twist, the next truck to fire up was none other than Jon Zimmer and Excaliber and he wasted no time setting the bar just about as high as it can get. Huge air, ridiculous momentum, wild cyclones and an incredible rollover to finish would get Jon a 28 score from the judges.
That would be a tough run to follow but Jeremy Perry in Crashmaster turned in a solid run with a couple nice slap wheelies. The new retro Michigan Ice Monster had a solid debut going, but an unlucky bounce for Chris Ryan locked up a rear tire ending his run early. Then Ben Winslow in Ground Pounder rolled out and turned in one of the best performances of his career, with huge air, a massive slap wheelie and a great save to take over second place.
After fairly solid performances from Lone Eagle, Prowler, Lucas Oil Stabilizer and Anger Management, the energy got cranked up with a great run from Allen Pezo in Predator. After rolling it over in racing, Allen pulled out all the stops in freestyle with one of the best runs yet. The judges awarded a score of 28 putting Pezo into a tie for the lead with Zimmer.
Jerry Perry in Brute Force followed with a strong run that featured donuts, big air and a wild slap wheelie into a rollover while Sean Duhon in Sudden Impact also got the crowd on their feet with an amazing crossthread over the double bus stack. Duhon's run would be good enough to take third overall. But then it was time for the American Guardian and Rick Raab. Raab held nothing back, going just as big as everyone else and being the first driver to launch it off the huge center FMX hill. Raab's run was easily a contender for the win, but the judges would only throw up a 26 as he took over third place.
Only one truck left to run and it was none other than the returning legend, as Eric Tack had one more chance to try and put Bigfoot back on top at the Silverdome. Tack showed absolutely no rust after a long time off from driving, executing some amazing moves with picture perfect precision. A viciously hard on the driver landing after launching off the FMX hill would force Tack to stop his run there, just barely short of the two minute mark. After amazing runs from Zimmer and Pezo, the judges had a tough decision to mark - was it enough to win? The judges threw up the scores and it turned out they thought it was as Tack received a 29, giving Bigfoot the win by one point!
What
an incredible night it was in Pontiac, Michigan. While the new owners of
the building have some work to do to get the venue back into top level
shape, this was a solid first event back and we were happy to have been
there for it. A huge congratulations to Sean Duhon and Eric Tack on their
big wins and a thanks to all the drivers and teams for their efforts. A
very special thank you to Brian Sharenow and everyone with FMG Events for
their hospitality to TheMonsterBlog.com this weekend.

King Krunch Tailgate Benefit Auction!!: (The Woodlands, TX) This year, as is every year, it was a great honor for Flame Motorsports to be included in the World Finals lineup. While some might question why we were in attendance, we know of one little guy that was very glad we came. His name was Zack. He is 6 years old and from the San Diego area. David chose Zack to help him out pulling his qualifying number. As drivers and older fans we sometimes loose the bigger picture. We get caught up in this junk or that junk, what he did or didn’t do to be at a certain place. Zack didn’t care if we came in first or last in every event we performed at this year. All he wanted to do was be by his favorite driver/drivers.
David
Smith commented, “It is a ton of responsibility for us as drivers to be in
the position we are in. Most of us got into the sport because we loved
tearing stuff up as kids. We can sometimes forget what it was like to be a
child looking up to our hero’s. Zack helped me see things through his
eyes; while we as adults get caught up in the business side of the sport,
Zack could care less about any of that. I realized at that point that I
really didn’t care what number we picked, or what lane we would get. I
just wanted to make sure that I didn’t mess up what Zack already knew. We
are here to have fun and play in the dirt, as long as Zack and everyone
else left Friday night and Saturday night with a smile on their faces then
our mission was accomplished. Zack told me that Friday night was the best
night of his life, to him I say Zack Thank You for allowing me to see
World Finals weekend as we all should. It was an Honor to have you by my
side.”

Rick said it was a lot of work but he really enjoyed working with David, Daron and Jeff and looks forward to working with their team again next year.

people and make new fans. We have to give them a big thanks for doing
autographs for two days so that Rick could help David Smith and the Flame
