Hall, Sylvester Winners at Bristol Motor Speedway Monster Madness!!:  Saturday night's Thompson Metal Monster Madness brought monster trucks back to Bristol Motor Speedway for the first time since the ProMT days!!  The Monster Truck Challenge event saw eight top trucks competing in racing and freestyle on the legendary high-banked oval, and Rich Schaefer and the MTC crew had a great race course for the drivers to tackle. Racing would be a run on a huge Chicago-style course that circled the pit road wall, with drivers having to make a total of seven jumps in a single pass. Mark Hall in Raminator laid down a blistering pass to take the top spot, but the hometown favorite Randy Moore would steal the #1 spot away as the last truck out in the first round of qualifying. But in the second round of qualifying, Hall would greatly better his time and Moore would not be able to answer back with Hall taking the top spot.

Just as the first round of racing was getting ready to begin, black storm clouds along with heavy thunder and lightning overtook the speedway, halting the event and causing the stands to be evacuated. Then the pouring rains came and the event was delayed for roughly an hour until the storm cell passed. Track officials made the call to curtail the racing portion of the event and go straight to freestyle, making Hall the effective winner of a timed runs style racing competition.
Freestyle would kick off with a great run from Mark Hall in Rammunition, while Kaila Savage in Heart Breaker and Brandon Budd in Ragin' Rebel followed with solid efforts of their own, including a great save from Budd. Dan Patrick would turn things up a notch with a strong effort in Samson, but the action really got going when Joe Sylvester and Bad Habit roared to the track. Sylvester proceeded to tackle the obstacles at full speed in Bad Habit, catching some huge air, keeping up plenty of momentum and spinning some donuts on the frontstretch to end his run. Sylvester then whipped off his best Tony Stewart / Helio Castroneves impression, climbing the fence to the delight of the crowd!

With only three trucks left and a high bar to shoot for, Mark Hall rolled out in Raminator and put on a great display of Hemi horsepower. Hall pulled off two amazing cyclones and tackled the bus numerous times for a great effort. Isaiah Morales was next out in Equalizer and gave the fans another great effort to consider when they picked a winner in the cheeroff. The final truck however was the hometown favorite Randy Moore in War Wizard. Moore got his run off to a great start with some big moves, but after a wild donut it was obvious there was a rear steering issue with the truck. Moore threw War Wizard into another cyclone to keep things moving but the stress on the motor proved to be too much as Randy's run ended when the truck refused to run any longer. It would be up to the crowd to pick a winner, with Hall, Morales and Sylvester the favorites to win, but the roar of the crowd clearly sided with Bad Habit and Sylvester picked up the biggest win of his career!
A big thanks to Rich Schaefer, Ryan Seddon, the whole MTC crew and everyone with Bristol Motor Speedway for their hospitality and a great event. Another big thanks to Tim and Mark Hall for allowing us to tag along with them this weekend so that we could make it out to Bristol to cover the event and bring you a special ride-along episode of TMB TV. And finally, thanks to our good friend Chris Parrish for the teaser photos and for helping us out in covering the show for TMB. Tomorrow we'll be in Champaign, IL for the Prairieland Monster Nationals as part of our weekend following Hall Brothers Racing, so stay tuned for tons more coverage from Bristol!!  (07/26/09)

Bounty Hunter, Barbarian Take Wins at Monsters In The Valley!!:  Valley Speedway brought monster trucks back for the second year in a row Saturday night, as Monsters In The Valley returned to Grain Valley, MO!!  The event featured a great lineup including Bounty Hunter, Iron Outlaw, Barbarian, Bar's Leaks Eliminator, Mechanical Mischief and Rislone Defender. The action kicked off early as the wheelie contest saw great efforts from Greg Adams in the Bar's Leaks Eliminator and Devin Jones in Barbarian. But Dawn Creten, in only her second week back from a year and a half long break, nailed down the victory with a huge wheelie, landing vertical in a leap that could have cleared ten cars. She was able to make a great save after the truck pogo'd into the ground, nearly throwing Iron Outlaw onto its side.

The race course would be a long Chicago-style layout that gave the trucks plenty of room to get lots of speed going. Greg Adams looked like the man to beat in the Bar's Leaks Eliminator as he marched through the brackets, easily defeating Iron Outlaw and Barbarian to face Bounty Hunter in the finals. Adams would make a slight bobble in the final round race however, and Jay McPherson's perfect pass in Bounty Hunter would give him the win.

For freestyle, the drivers would have the two car sets, two van stacks and two wheelie bumps to work with. Zach Adams kicked things off with a solid run and Jim Burns in Mechanical Mischief and Greg Adams in Eliminator followed with strong efforts, each featuring a big slap wheelie.

Dawn Creten would raise the bar a little higher in Iron Outlaw, pulling off some big jumps over the van stacks and throwing in a quick slap wheelie and donut.

Devin Jones rocked the house in Barbarian, laying down a great run featuring big air and a huge slap wheelie, finishing with a crazy cylone that saw the left rear tire come right off the rim. Despite Jay McPherson's best efforts in Bounty Hunter, there would be no topping Devin Jones as Barbarian was declared the freestyle winner.

Monsters In The Valley was a big success as Valley Speedway had a great crowd on hand to watch the monster trucks and B-modified racing. A big thanks to Cameron Migues and the Valley Speedway staff for their hospitality and a great event. Monsters In The Valley will be featured in our next episode of TMB TV, along with the NTPA Grand Nationals event from Troy, MO. Stay tuned for TMB TV, which will be premiering later this week, and for a full event photo gallery, coming soon!!  (07/19/09)

504 Rocket, Midnight Madness, Stud Monkey & Double Down Take NTPA Wins In Troy!!:  TheMonsterBlog.com attended our first NTPA Grand Nationals event this weekend at the Lincoln County Fairgrounds in Troy, MO!!  We had a blast learning more about the sport of truck and tractor pulling first hand, and a big thanks to Larry Richwine and Greg Randall with the NTPA, as well as Jay Schaefer with the Lincoln County Fair for their hospitality. Five classes were competing Friday night, the Light Super Stocks, Super Stock Diesels, Mini Modifieds, Super Semis, and our favorite, the 2WD Trucks. Some of the top pullers in the nation in each class were on hand, providing for a night of great competition. Kevin Lynn piloted his 504 Rocket to the Light Super Stocks victory, winning a three tractor pulloff with a distance of 304.36 feet.

The 2WD Trucks would feature the largest field of pullers Friday night, and Jessie Petro set a great early mark in 2 Timin' with a distance of 302.24 feet. Only one other driver would be able to eclipse the 300 ft. mark, and it would be Jordan Nelson in Midnight Madness as he just edged out Petro for the overall win with a 303.60 foot pull.

The wildest moment of the night came during the 2WD class as Chase Richardson made his pull in his Chase This t-bucket. Halfway down the track, Richardson's motor began to let go before finally blowing up in a huge plume of smoke.

The Mini Modified class never fails to put on an amazing show as those little hot rods are a handful to drive. Mark Stigge would beat out a tough field in his Stud Monkey machine, with a winning pull of 295.36 feet.

One of the fan favorites is definitely the Super Semi class, and as you would expect, the big rigs did not disappoint. Jeremy Walker in Double Down was the test puller, turning down his first run and dropping down to the final slot in the lineup. After all the other trucks had won, it turned out that Walker's test pull would have been the winning distance had he accepted it. The pressure was on as he drove out for the final pull, but Walker had what it took, taking Double Down to a winning distance of 284.52 feet.

You'll see all the action from the above four classes in the next episode of TMB TV, our tribute to the classic "Trucks & Tractor Power" television program. In other pulling, David Siefert won the Super Stock Diesel class in his Renegade Deere with a total distance of 310.46 feet. Stay tuned for a photo gallery from the event and for our next episode of TMB TV!!  (07/18/09)

Jim & Chris Allen's Pomona, CA July 4th Kaboom Experience!!:  They've been bringing you great coverage this month here on TMB, and we've proud to have another coverage from Jim and Chris Allen today, this one from the July 4th Kaboom event at the Pomona, CA Fairplex. We've got another entertaining blog from Chris and more great photos from Jim, check it all out below:
"The Fairplex in Pomona, California is no stranger to excitement or entertainment. That is why every seat in the Main Grandstand was filled this past Independence Day. The Fourth of July was celebrated with some high-flying FMX riders, a dynamic fireworks show and a half dozen of the best monster trucks!! The lineup consisted of five of the top independent drivers and their monster trucks in the U.S.A today. Bounty Hunter and Iron Outlaw’s Jimmy Creten and Joe Miller along with Travis, Ronnie and Sam Sturges in 1/2 Pint, Nasty Boy and Unnamed & Untamed. There was, however, one additional truck on standby if a scheduled truck or two could not come back for their second and final run of the night. That truck? That truck is one of the most unusual in the entire world, the Pro Comp Monster Truck driven by Frank Schettini. What makes it different is the driver does his driving while standing suspended in an 18-point harness. This allows Frank to use his legs as extra shock absorbers.

The action started fast and furious as some of the best Freestyle Motocross riders on the West Coast got air and performed tricks far too insane to describe here. Throw in 9 cars, yes, you read that correctly, NINE CARS side-by-side, two wheelie obstacles and a pair of doomed motor homes and you get a monster truck freestyle fan’s delight. The opening trucks, Unnamed &Untamed, 1/2 Pint and Iron Outlaw, did very well, but only 1/2 Pint was able to survive to continue with additional runs. Unnamed bent 6 valves, rendering his engine inoperable and Iron Outlaw broke an input shaft, kissing his transmission goodbye. The Pro Comp monster substituted for the done Iron Outlaw and Unnamed. Boy, did the Pomona fans really take notice of the World’s Only Standing Driven Monster Truck!  Bounty Hunter finished off the final runs with a ton of energy and high flying action. When Bounty Hunter hit the second motor home to close the monster truck show, the pyrotechnics guys ignited the initial fireworks salvo which wasted very little time in firing up the crowd for the Fireworks Grand Finale.
The great fireworks show left a lasting impact on all who witnessed it. Monster truck fans out there, if you live in or near Pomona, be sure to get your tickets for next year’s “KABOOM”! You won’t want to miss it!!"
Thanks to Jim & Chris for another great coverage from Pomona, click the link below to see all of Jim's great photos. Stay tuned as well because Jim and Chris will be back at it in a few weeks from the huge first Monster Jam event at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona!!  (07/16/09)

Bloomsburg, PA 4-Wheel Jamboree Nationals Photo Gallery!!:  One of the most highly anticipated events of the year was this past weekend as the 4-Wheel Jamboree Nationals made its annual stop in Bloomsburg, PA!!  The Monster Truck Thunder Drags would feature a great lineup of trucks including Summit Bigfoot, Avenger, Raminator, General Tire, Rammunition, and Gun Slinger, as well as the debut of Straight Up Racing's Rock Star and Miss Behavin trucks on the Family Events tour. A total of four shows were held over the three day weekend with Dan Runte picking up the Friday night racing win in Summit Bigfoot. Saturday afternoon would see Chris Bergeron drive General Tire to the racing victory, while Bill Payne pulled off a surpise win in Rock Star against Runte in the finals Saturday night. Sunday would see Payne once again in the final round against Mark Hall in Raminator, but a blown transmission halfway down the track would hand the win to Hall, his fourth victory on the Monster Truck Thunder Drags tour in '09. Monster Blog Staff Member Paul M. Harry made the trip up to Bloomsburg for the Friday and Saturday shows and has another great photo gallery ready for your viewing pleasure. Click the link below to see all of Paul's awesome photos, a big thanks to Paul and his family for making the trip out to Bloomsburg again this year!!  (07/15/09)

Jim & Chris Allen's Thunder Raceway Outlaw Monster Trucks Experience!!:  Jim and Chris Allen were back on the road again over the weekend and this time they hit up the Outlaw Monster Truck Spectacular at Thunder Raceway in Show Low, AZ!!  Check out another great blog entry from Chris and more awesome photos from Jim below:
"Thunder Raceway in beautiful Show Low, Arizona did not start out as a junkyard. But it certainly ended up that way after the battle of the monster trucks. The three truck team of Sturges Motorsports and the two truck team of 2Xtreme Racing met to put on a great monster truck show. Travis, Ronnie and Sam Sturgis were driving 1/2 Pint, Nasty Boy and Unnamed & Untamed respectively. We learned that Unnamed and Untamed will be getting a brand new orange flame paint job on a black body pretty soon, so watch out for that. The show also brought exciting news as Dawn Creten, who has really been missing getting behind the wheel, would be driving Iron Outlaw filling in for Joe Miller. While talking to her she said that she really misses driving the Scarlet Bandit and is considering driving again in 2010. And, as always, Jimmy Creten was behind the wheel of Bounty Hunter.

The drivers had to make a lot out of a little at this track. There was a small dirt hill and five crush cars to work with. The cars were lined up with four in a line and there was a single car for wheelies. The fans’ expectations were high and the drivers were ready. The first runs introduced each driver and truck. They were short but sweet with each jump getting longer and more spectacular. The second runs had the Sturges trucks nailing their signature wheelies with no problems and making some nice jumps. Dawn and the Iron Outlaw performed well but when it was all over, she had a flat left front tire. The crew worked feverishly to get the tire repairs done between the second and third runs. The loudest applause of all was saved for Bounty Hunter, doing donuts at each end of the track until the dust covered everything and it was almost impossible to see him on the track.

The third and final runs were the best and most exciting of the night. The fans were standing as the monsters said goodbye to Show Low for another year. Outlaw Monster Trucks doesn't announce a winner at the show, but promoter Steve Querico usually declares an overall winner so be watching the Blog's Results Tracker for that. The fans, however thought each and every driver in the field was a winner after a great event!"
Thanks to Chris for the great weekend recap, check out Jim's photos by clicking the link below and watch for another update from Jim & Chris from the Pomona, CA July 4th event coming soon!!  (07/13/09)

Rob French Backflips Twisted Dragon In Cottage Grove, OR!!:  The monster truck backflip club has just got its fourth member as Rob French has pulled off the move in Twisted Dragon Friday night in Cottage Grove, Oregon!!  The Monster X Tour event at Cottage Grove Speedway once again featured a driver trying the backflip, after successful efforts by Larry Quick and Kevin Poore at past events. Rob's backflip saw the truck come around and land on the nose, allowing him to pull the truck the rest of the way over with the front tires - much like Kevin Poore's in Redding and Larry Quick's second in Cheyenne. Quick's first successful attempt in Vermont is still the best we've seen, as its the only backflip that has seen the truck do a full rotation and land on all four tires. Congratulations to Rob French and the Wildfire Motorsports team on their success, now the only question is, who will be next?  Stay tuned, we'll keep you up to date!!  (07/12/09)

Jim & Chris Allen's San Diego County Fair Monster Truck Experience!!:  Our good friends Jim and Chris Allen headed out to California this past weekend for the annual San Diego County Fair monster truck show and they were once again kind enough to send us over some coverage of the event!! Check out Chris' blog entry and Jim's great photos below:

"The San Diego County Fair in Del Mar, California has something for everyone: kid rides, farm animals, pig races, main stage shows and of course, monster trucks. Six of the best independent trucks and drivers in the country gathered to close out the fair over the Fourth of July weekend for 2009. The Friday show opened with fans getting a glimpse of life from the other side of the universe when the transformers Galactron and Reptar gave a peaceful message to us “earthlings”. Next, the World’s Youngest Monster Truck Driver, Eric Swanson, son of Obsessed monster truck driver Rick Swanson, won the Jr. Trophy Cart race.
It was to be a frustrating show for Bill Payne in Miss Behavin and Tony Canedo in Play'n 4 Keeps. Payne broke the transmission about 15 seconds into his run and only got an 18 from the judges. Canedo broke the right front wheel off after a jump over the smaller of two dirt mountains in the middle of the arena floor. Joe Miller and Iron Outlaw gave a good run that tied Play'n for Keeps for the points lead with a score of 33. Rick Swanson and Obsessed and Ken Whitlong in Rock Star both put in good runs but failed to beat the leaders. But Bounty Hunter, driven by Jimmy Creten, gave the judges everything they asked for: uniqueness, momentum and hitting everything on the track. With a perfect score of 40, Jimmy and Bounty Hunter took the Friday evening trophy plaque.

We were out in Pomona Saturday night, but returned for the final day of the San Diego County Fair as over 5,000 monster truck fans from all over California come to see the monster trucks one last time. The 2 Xtreme Racing trucks, Bounty Hunter and Iron Outlaw moved on to Pomona after Friday, however two exciting new trucks were waiting to take their place: Time Flies and Fired Up with Kelvin Ramer doing double duty.
The monster truck lineup started with Fired Up with Kelvin Ramer at the wheel putting on a good run and “firing up” the fans in attendance. Teri Olson in Miss Behavin’ also put on a really solid run. Obsessed and Rick Swanson hit all of the obstacles multiple times and earned the provisional lead from the judges. His final donut went on for what seemed like several minutes. Play'n 4 Keeps was next and put on a spectacular run hitting all obstacles and earning the lead from the judges. Time Flys put on a good run but finished early with an unresolved problem in the truck. Rock Star blew the transmission during his run and ended his weekend to finish the afternoon show.

The 5PM show began again with the visitors from another galaxy continued their message to “unleash the power of dreams.” Galactron and Reptar waved one last goodbye to Earth before leaving. The final Jr. Kart race was won by K.C Winter, a young lady with some big racing talent. The afternoon saw some interesting runs and turns of events. Teri Olson in Miss Behavin’, the only female driver in the field this year, made a good efforts, but there was a lack of momentum in the run and it showed on the judge’s scorecards. Fired Up was next, jumped to start his run and went on to leave nothing on the track unhit. The run was full of momentum and excitement. The judge’s expectations were high, but Rick Swanson and Obsessed were ready. Momentum? Check. Uniqueness? Check. Hitting everything on the track? Well, everything except the big mountain in middle of the floor. A sheared off front drive shaft ended his run before he could make that last jump and finish his run with his usual long donut. Tony Canedo in Playn’ 4 Keeps put on a really great run but he could not stop Obsessed from receiving the highest total score for the weekend and Rick Swanson being crowned the weekend’s undisputed monster truck champion. Many a fan that saw the event will probably come back next year for more!!"

First Ever Monster Jam Freestyle Mania to Debut at Mobile Civic Center!!:  (Aurora, IL)  Feld Motor Sports announced today a new, explosive and action packed version of Monster Jam® titled Monster Jam Freestyle Mania. Monster Jam Freestyle Mania will make its debut July 24-25 at the Mobile Civic Center in Mobile, Ala.

This show will feature the largest fleet of monster trucks to compete at the Mobile Civic Center, including Grave Digger®, King Krunch, Gunslinger, El Toro Loco®, Taz monster truck, El Matador, Instigator and Bad News Travels Fast.
Monster Jam Freestyle Mania, the brainchild of Feld Motor Sports producer and Feld Entertainment Chairman and CEO Kenneth Feld, features an array of mind-blowing freestyle competitions, featuring Monster Jam Freestyle, Quad-FMX, Freestyle Super Bike, Freestyle Motocross and Freestyle BMX during an action packed two-hour show.
Monster Jam Freestyle Mania will feature the following show elements:
- Monster Jam Wheelie Competition - Unlike the traditional power wheelie, where the driver uses the engine’s power to transfer up onto the back wheels, this wheelie competition will be judged on how they use the course’s obstacles to pull off the perfect wheelie.
- Monster Jam Compulsories - Drivers will be time challenged to navigate their way through an obstacle course that includes cars, trucks and more barriers positioned on the track to slow down the 10,000 pound trucks.
- Jam Session - Built into the middle of the program will be the first-ever ‘Jam Session,’ where Quad-FMXers, Freestyle Superbikers, Freestyle Motocrossers, and Freestyle BMXers will perform simultaneously at one time on the course.
- Monster Jam Donut Competition - Performing a donut while driving has been around for long time, but it was through the defiance of monster truck drivers, a regular donut was not enough. Enter the cyclone, a move where the driver creates enough speed while performing a regular donut that the truck’s rear tires gyrate so rapidly that the truck appears to be nailed to the floor.
- Monster Jam Freestyle Competition - Bigger, better and badder than ever before, this contest will feature traditional Monster Jam Freestyle. No rules, no restriction as the trucks pogo-stick their way around the course in an effort to deliver the most entertaining run possible.
“Freestyle Mania brings a new flavor to Monster Jam,” said Bill Easterly, senior director of operations, Feld Motor Sports. “The idea is to bring more entertainment and more of what the fans want than ever before!”
Included in the price of the ticket is free admission to the Built Ford Tough Party in the Pits on Friday and Saturday from 5:30-7:00 p.m., giving fans a chance to get a view of the trucks up-close and personal and meet the drivers of the 10,000 pound behemoth monster trucks.
Southern Ford Dealers are offering fans ticket vouchers for buy three get one free and participating Advance Auto Parts locations are offering $5-off coupons. Tickets are also available at the Mobile Civic Center Box Office, all Ticketmaster locations or by phone at 800-745-3000. For more information, check out www.MonsterJam.com!!  (07/07/09)
